Bicentennial Heritage Capsule

Help create a snapshot of Dublin for future generations

As part of the City of Dublin’s Bicentennial Celebration, a bicentennial heritage capsule will be buried at the new shelter house in Coffman Park during the Dublin Historical Society’s Heritage Day event on Oct. 2.

The heritage capsule will be opened in 2060 when the community celebrates 250 years.

Part of the heritage capsule will be filled by the City of Dublin, Dublin City Schools, Dublin Arts Council, Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau, Dublin Chamber of Commerce, Dublin Historical Society, Dublin Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, and the local media, all of whom have been asked to make submissions.

The City also is reserving part of the capsule for the general community. To reflect what modern day Dublin means to its residents, the City is seeking recommendations for items to include in the capsule. Residents can submit photos and a description of their suggested items online and residents will have a chance to vote on the submissions in August. The top vote-getters will be included in the capsule.

The space allocated for the community contribution is approximately 6x6x15 inches. Submitted items must fit within that space and be able to withstand underground storage for an extended period of time. The following website has advice on selecting appropriate contents: www.si.edu/mci/english/learn_more/taking_care/timecaps.html.

All residents are eligible to submit an item and the City encourages residents to choose one that best represents current-day Dublin for future generations. Suggestions can be anything ranging from photos and written materials to physical keepsakes and mementos. Such items could help tell future generations something about Dublin that the community may have forgotten or might not know.

Submissions should be made by Aug. 1. Voting will take place in August.
