'Leatherlips' outdoor drama planned for Scioto Park

Theater students from Dublin's three high schools will be teaming up to present “Leatherlips: Twin Clouds” to help celebrate the community's bicentennial this summer.

The performances will be at 7 p.m. July 1, 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, and 31 at Scioto Park.

The story centers on the life and death of Wyandot Chief Leatherlips, who was executed 200 years ago near Scioto park. His given Wyandot name was 'Shateyaronyah,' but he became known as "Leatherlips" because he kept his word with both the settlers and his people. Leatherlips fought for peace between the settlers and natives of the Dublin area, as well as the larger region.

It is largely accepted that he died as a martyr to his belief that settlers and natives could get along and that war was not the answer to the tensions that existed between the different peoples.

The story of the play is narrated by an actor portraying Bill Moose, who was one of the last Wyandot to live in this region. He becomes our guide for the story of his hero and distant relative.

The performances will take place in the section of the park near where the execution took place.

Bicentennial Heritage Capsule

Help create a snapshot of Dublin for future generations

As part of the City of Dublin’s Bicentennial Celebration, a bicentennial heritage capsule will be buried at the new shelter house in Coffman Park during the Dublin Historical Society’s Heritage Day event on Oct. 2.

The heritage capsule will be opened in 2060 when the community celebrates 250 years. Read more and submit your ideas on what should be in the capsule.

Bicentennial artwork in final design stage after public feedback

After hearing resident suggestions and feedback, artist Brower Hatcher is creating final designs of his vision for the next Art in Public Places project in Historic Dublin.

These final renderings will be placed on the City of Dublin website later in June.

Hatcher visited Dublin in early May, when the City hosted a public forum at which residents and other interested people could offer their thoughts about the color, materials, exact location on the site, and scope of the proposed artwork. A copy of the summary of resident feedback can be viewed by clicking here.

Construction of the artwork is expected to be completed in 2011.

The Living History Exhibit

Living History Community Day: Saturday, May 29
11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Coffman Homestead

Meet Linda McFarlin and six of the re-enactors that are portrayed in her art at the Coffman Home-stead.  These re-enactors will include a Flint Knapper, Longhunter, Native Americans, Pioneer Family and Children with their toys.  Additional pieces of Linda McFarlin’s artwork will be on display in the barn with historically accurate artifacts. The artist, re-enactors and the Dublin Historic Society docents will be available to share stories and information about the artifacts and Homestead. All members of the community are welcome to attend. There will be no admission charged for this event.

Living History Exhibit: May 1 - 29
Dublin Community Recreation Center

The artist, Linda McFarlin, has created a historically significant art exhibit which covers the time from 1700 – 1870 and has matched her art to letters and journal entries from that period. Much of her work depicts the character and emotion of native Americans and settlers of that time.

The Dublin Area Art League and the Dublin Historical Society hope that the entire family might enjoy these events which complement the elementary history units and provide a more personal look into Dublin’s past.

Dublin Memory Project goes live

The Dublin Memory Project is now online

This collaboration between the Dublin Historical Society, the Dublin Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, and the City of Dublin was awarded a grant from the City of Dublin in 2009 to help celebrate the Bicentennial in 2010. The grant allows the partners to gather, promote, research, catalog, digitize and preserve Dublin's history for in-person and on-line access. Visit the site.
