Adult Diversion
The Diversion Program is offered as an alternative to Court activity which allows first time offenders the opportunity to correct their behavior and repay the community without receiving a criminal record. Another goal of the program is to have the offender learn from the experience and avoid future contacts with the legal system. This program is used mainly for non-violent criminal offenses and is used only when the case has been deemed eligible and when the defendant volunteers to enter the program. Eligibility for the program is determined by the City Prosecutor during the pre-trial conference. If this program is successfully completed, the charge(s) will be dismissed. There is a fee associated with entry into Diversion.
Juvenile Diversion
This program is voluntary and offered to first time juvenile offenders who have been charged with a non violent criminal misdemeanor violation. Violations include but are not limited to the following: curfew, underage consumption of alcohol, petty theft, disorderly conduct, and possession of drug paraphernalia/drug abuse. In exchange for successful completion, formal charges are not filed against the juvenile. This allows the juvenile offender to keep their record clean while affording them the opportunity to give something back to the community. The goal is for the juvenile to learn from the experience and avoid any future contact with the criminal justice system. Eligibility is determined by the City of Dublin’s Community Justice Officer and Division of Police. A participant may be required to complete community service work, counseling, education, and/or restitution depending on the nature of the offense. There is no fee required for participation.
Adult Probation
The main goal of this program is to provide supervision, guidance and support to offenders in order to prevent future contact with the legal system. Offenders are ordered into the program by the Court and are monitored by a probation officer who regularly meets with them to monitor their progress and provide support through referrals to other resources within the community.
Community Service
The City of Dublin has an active community service program. It is a voluntary program and is usually used as a condition of Diversion as well as an alternative to higher fines and costs. The offenders are matched to a governmental or non-profit agency. The purpose of the program is to have the offender give something back to the community for the time and effort spent due to the offense. This program may be used in conjunction with either of the diversion programs or with probation.
Offenders may find service sites on their own, or may be placed with assistance from the City of Dublin Volunteer Services. Placement sites include, but are not limited to the following: Dublin Community Recreation Center, Dublin Streets & Utilities, Dublin Parks & Open Spaces, The Columbus Zoo, The Dublin Arts Council, The Community Kitchen, Carriage Place Recreation Center, Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau, DARE Association of Ohio, Holy Family Kitchen, Material Assistance Providers, the Welcome Warehouse, and Willow Ridge.
