Avery Road Water Tower Re-coating

Water Tower Re-coating
Project to be complete by mid-November
  • The contractor has finished blasting the existing coating and applying the zinc primer. The primer is green in color as can currently be seen on the tower.

  • The welded seams of the tower are currently being coated with an initial coat of the intermediate part of the three-part system. The entire tower will be sprayed with the intermediate coating over the next week. This level is the base off-white/creamy color. This will be applied inside the containment.

  • The final coating will be rolled onto the tank. This will not require the containment to be in place. This coating will apply the other colors to the tank and the graphics package (shamrock and band at the top and the children's sports silhouettes and "grasses" at the bottom).

  • Painting will be complete by Oct. 29 and final site cleanup to be done by Nov. 15.

  • This coating system will last at least 12 to 15 years. Periodic inspections will occur to determine the condition of the coating.

According to City of Dublin Director of Engineering Paul Hammersmith, PE, this is the first re-coating of the entire exterior of the Avery Park water tower since the installation of the special graphics package in the mid 1990’s. Hammersmith said the roof of the water tower was re-coated in 2002 as the original coating had deteriorated.

Hammersmith said the city awarded the contract to M.K Painting, Inc. for $474,000. The contractor will use a “containment – tenting” process during the removal of the existing paint surface and during the first primer stages of re-coating.

We want to assure Dublin residents, especially in the Avery Park vicinity, they will not be impacted in any way by the blasting material or the paint spray,” said Hammersmith.

“The tenting will provide a protective shield which will contain the removed paint and blasting material – eliminating over-spray on homes, cars and park facilities in the tower area.”

Hammersmith noted one possible inconvenience to nearby residents and recreational park users will be the moderate-level of noise during the blasting and prime coat spraying processes. The tank will be under containment for about four weeks with blasting done in the morning hours and prime coat application in the afternoons. With the containment removed, the final paint coating, including the graphics, will be rolled onto the water tower, not sprayed.

The communications facilities located at the top of the tower (antennas for cellular service) will be relocated to three temporary towers placed near the tank. Hammersmith said they do not anticipate any service disruption.
