About the Green Roof
The City of Dublin installed an environmentally friendly “green” rooftop at the Dublin Community Recreation Center, thanks in part to a $50,650 grant from the Ohio EPA’s Surface Water Improvement Fund (SWIF).
The City of Dublin added $22,230 to fund the project, which included a 2,300-foot green rooftop, two rain barrels to harvest rainwater for the rooftop plants, and a rain gauge to measure how much water is being diverted from nearby South Indian Run stream.
The benefits of the green roof include a reduced volume of storm water, along with the pollution that water can carry, flowing off the roof. It also will improve climate control efficiency within the building, extend the life of the existing roof and provide aesthetic visual benefits.
More than $1 million was made available statewide through Ohio EPA’s new SWIF program for projects designed to reduce pollution coming from sources away from stream banks. Ultimately, the goal of SWIF is to improve water quality in Ohio’s lakes, streams and rivers.
SWIF grants are designed to demonstrate improvements in practices that keep soil, excess nutrients and pesticides out of waterways and will lead to better water in Ohio.
More information about SWIF grants is available at www.epa.ohio.gov/dsw/nps/index.aspx.
