Save gas, ride your bike to work during the annual Bike-to-Work Week

(DUBLIN, Ohio) - Join retired Major League Baseball Pitcher Kent Mercker for the National Bike-to-Work Week Kickoff at 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 16 at the Dublin Community Recreation Center (DCRC), 5600 Post Road.

Retired Major League Baseball Pitcher Kent Mercker will be the guest speaker for the kickoff and participants will begin their ride to work at 8:50 a.m.

“The City and Dublin’s Bike Advisory Task Force recognize the potential benefits of a bike-accessible community to the health, transportation and environmental needs of the residents and visitors,” said City Manager Marsha Grigsby. “Studies have shown bike-accessible and friendly communities are seen as places with a high quality of life which often translates to increased property values, business growth and increased tourism.”

Although more than half of the U.S. population lives within five miles of their workplace, lack of knowledge and incentive has deterred many from commuting by bike. Hundreds of U.S. cities, including Dublin, have been able to increase the number of bicycle commuters by celebrating Bike-to-Work Week (Bike League, 2011).

Following the kickoff, there will be bike tune-up available at no cost from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the DCRC.

Additionally, the annual Bike Rodeo, sponsored by Dublin Police and Washington Township Fire Dept., will be held from 10 a.m. - noon Saturday, May 21 at the DCRC, rain or shine. All ages and skill level are invited. A confidence course will be held to help bike handling, bike safety, knowledge of community signs and rules of the road. There will also be helmet fitting, bicycle inspections, and EMS bike patrol and Dublin Police Officers available for questions.

The City has more than 90 miles of bike paths and 38 parks. Learn about the bikeway system and how to map out a bike ride by visiting here
