Heinz von Eckartsberg selected as Dublin’s new Chief of Police

Colleen Gilger(DUBLIN, Ohio) - Dublin City Manager Marsha Grigsby has selected Heinz von Eckartsberg as the City’s new Chief of Police.

“Heinz has spent his entire law enforcement career in service to the City, which has provided him a comprehensive understanding of Dublin’s history and culture,” said Grigsby. “He truly understands the public safety needs of the community and has demonstrated his commitment to meeting and exceeding those needs and expectations.”

Chief von Eckartsberg’s salary as a Lieutenant was $98,583; as Interim Chief of Police was $108,440; and now as Chief of Police is $110,413.

The City conducted an internal talent assessment on Chief von Eckartsberg focusing on the qualifications and core competencies required for successful performance.

Additionally, the City retained the services of the Ferrell Group to conduct an independent assessment of Chief von Eckartsberg. This assessment center process included a series of intellectual and practical, hands-on, interactive challenges designed to stimulate valid job-related experiences.

Chief von Eckartsberg’s score from the assessment center process was a 97.25 on a scale of 100. The assessment team concluded that Chief von Eckartsberg’s score was higher than any other candidate on which they had performed such assessments. Based on both the internal and external assessments, Grigsby requested the competitive selection process be waived.

“Heinz has served as the Interim Chief of Police for seven months and has demonstrated the leadership and technical competence to function at a high level in this role,” said Grigsby. “The assessment team noted that Heinz displayed a passionate attitude and demeanor regarding the City as an organization.”  

Background
Chief von Eckartsberg has been a member of the Dublin Division of Police since February 1983. 

During his career Chief von Eckartsberg has served as a patrol officer, patrol sergeant, operations commander, services bureau commander, Lieutenant and most recently as Interim Chief of Police. Chief von Eckartsberg is the fourth Chief of Police since Dublin became a City in 1987. Former Chiefs of Police include Ron Ferrell, Rob Geis, and Mike Epperson.

While serving as operations commander, Chief von Eckartsberg supervised the operations of the division’s patrol section, K-9 unit and was instrumental in developing the division’s problem-oriented policing and motorcycle units. 

As services bureau commander he was charged with managing the Division’s community education unit (DARE and School Resource Officers), investigation’s section, and the coordination of safety for all City special events including the Memorial Tournament and Dublin Irish Festival. He also has been responsible for managing his department’s accreditation section, community relations and recruiting efforts.

Chief von Eckartsberg graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from Franklin University in Columbus. He is also a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, and the Ohio Police Executive Leadership College. Chief von Eckartsberg is an associate member of the Ohio Chiefs of Police, a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Police Executive Leadership College (PELC) Alumni Association. Chief von Eckartsberg is also a member and lead consultant for the Ohio Chiefs of Police Advisory Services Committee.

Chief von Eckartsberg lives in Dublin with his wife Debby and has three children.

An official Swearing-In Ceremony is slated for 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, April 6 at the Justice Center, 6565 Commerce Parkway.
