Be a Part of the Next Dublin Art in Public Places Installation

(Dublin, Ohio) - Brower Hatcher of Mid-Ocean Studio in Providence, R.I., the artist commissioned to design the next installation in the City of Dublin and Dublin Arts Council’s Art in Public Places program is hoping the public will want to be a part of the historic artwork.

To celebrate the symbolism of a historic blacksmith shop, Hatcher is seeking donated objects that are representative of the era, such as blacksmith tools or objects that have been created by the forging process. The items may be functional or decorative.

Hatcher has described the artwork as a sophisticated trellis made of green, powder-coated, stainless steel rods. The rods create the framework of a 13-foot-square, 16-foot-tall building-shaped structure that represents George M. Karrer’s blacksmith shop that once existed on the property.

Hatcher plans to incorporate representations of appropriate “found objects” into the structure and place the original wheelwright table inside. The artwork, which was commissioned as part of the city’s 2010 bicentennial celebration, will be located near the intersection of South High Street and Waterford Drive in Historic Dublin.

Now through 5 p.m., May 27, the Dublin Arts Council will be collecting items to be embedded in the artwork. Hatcher will be making final selections before the artwork’s unveiling in late summer.

The Dublin Art in Public Places program was established in 1989 by the City of Dublin and Dublin Arts Council to enhance the quality of life for Dublin residents and strengthen the city as a destination for visitors. The program is funded through the City of Dublin’s hotel/motel tax fund.

Artifacts will be collected during regular operating hours and inventoried by Dublin Arts Council. Contributions must be delivered in person and donors will need to collect items not selected by the artist by Aug. 12. Dublin Arts Council is located at 7125 Riverside Dr., and may be reached at 614-889-7444 with any questions. For large items, please call ahead before delivering.
