Dublin encourages residents to be aware of an increase in skunk activity

DUBLIN (Ohio) – Love is blossoming in the animal world as many animals enter mating season. As a result, people have probably smelled an unwelcomed, yet familiar scent.

Skunks may be considered a nuisance to most but they keep many insect and rodent populations in check because of their eating habits.

Late February through March is the time you will notice an abundance of skunk activity throughout residential areas.  People are not a usual threat to skunks, but pets can be. It is important to know how to handle a situation if a skunk is in your presence and near your home.

Always monitor your pet if you if there is skunk activity in your area:

  • Creating noise is a good way to warn an animal you and your pet are approaching

  • Keep dogs on leashes if a skunk has been spotted in your yard

  • Skirting around decks, crawl spaces and sheds can keep skunks out of these areas and away from your home

  • Keeping lids on trash cans and watching the amount of bird food in feeders is helpful since skunks will eat any food they can find
