Grounds of Remembrance
dedicated Memorial Day 2009

More than 1,000 people joined Dublin City Council and Veterans Project Committee members for a special dedication of the Grounds of Remembrance in Dublin Veterans Park on Monday, May 25, 2009.

The keynote speech was delivered by Col. Tom Moe, a Lancaster resident who served five years as a prisoner of war with Sen. John McCain in Viet Nam. The ceremony included a reading of a letter written by U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Wesley Davids, who was killed in Iraq in 2005.

After Wesley's mother Jody Davids, a member of the Veterans Project Committee, read the letter, she was escorted by her other son Steven, also a U.S. Marine Lance Corporal, and two bagpipers to the Memory Wall at the Grounds of Remembrance. Two F-16s simultaneously flew overhead. The Memory Wall is a quiet location for retrospection where visitors are invited to leave letters, notes and other items in the memory of those who sacrificed for their country.

Other speakers at the dedication included Mayor Marilee Chinnici-Zuercher, City Council Members John Reiner and Michael Keenan, site designer Lisa Rapoport of Plant Architect Inc., and Cardinal Health Senior Vice President of Supply Chain Integrity Mark Hartman.

A Memorial Day picnic featuring Civil War reenactors followed the dedication behind Indian Run Elementary.
